300 Days On The Road! Woo Hoo! :) (PA) “DAY 300” – 4/30/11

May 2, 2011 - 4:02 pm - (PA) “DAY 300” - Week 44 - State 41

Man, does it feel good to wake up in king size comfortable bed with a flat screen TV on the wall on front of me.  Thank you Matt!  This place rocks!  Not to mention, his house and farm in general are gorgeous. 🙂

I gotta tell ya, this is the perfect way start my “DAY 300”!  I’m with one of my favorite people in the world (Matt), I had an amazing day yesterday to reflect on, and today Matt is throwing a bonfire on his farm (in my honor) with a bunch of our friends. (Most of the people coming, I have known for years.)

Matts Works On The Farm
If you read last week’s post when I was here for Easter, you would know that Matt was raised on this farm and has lived here his whole life. (He has his own house on the property, but his parents place is just a 100 yards away or so.)

Anyway, my point is, he is always doing something.  Whether it’s his 9-5 job his does all week long or the many hours of work he does here on the farm, Matt is a go getter. 🙂

So, this morning after I finally rose and shone (past tense of rise and shine in my opinion), I found Matt who was already on a tractor working on the farm.  What he was doing was gathering all kinds of wood to add to an already massive bond fire pile.  Oh yeah! 🙂

Working With Matt
Since Matt was on the farm working just to make the party (for me) better, I walked out onto the farm and tried to help him out anyway I could.  As you should know by now, I’m not much help on a farm, so I just hung out with him and kept him company as his did all the work.  Boy, it was tiring! 😉

Planting A Tree
After getting the bond fire pile big enough to make “Smokey The Bear” nervous, Matt and I found a spot on his farm to plant a tree I got him last week when I was here for Easter.  (It was some kind of tree that will grow up 75 feet high if it makes it.)

Again, Matt did all the work in the planting of the tree.  He found a perfect spot, he dug the hole, he planted the tree, he covered it up with dirt, and then even gave it some water.  On the other hand, I stood there exhausted watching him work so hard. 😉

Getting Beer For The Bonfire
If you couldn’t already tell, Matt is a very generous guy, so for his bond fire tonight , he went out and got a bunch of beer for the entire party. (He bought 5 cases of beer for roughly 10-15 guys.)  Hey, if they need more, they’ll have to get it themselves. 😉 (His wife also bought a bunch of food everybody.)

The Party Starts (6 pm-ish)
The party was scheduled to start around 5 pm but the first group of guys (Sam, Scottie, Greg, Teddy) arrived closer to 6.  So, that’s when we left the house and headed to where the bond fire was gonna be held. (From Matt’s house, it was about 100 yards down a hill and into a open field.)

Once we got down there, the only thing on anybody’s mind other than grabbing a beer, was getting this baby going.  I can’t speak for anybody else, but I love watching fire and a fire this big... should be real cool to witness. 🙂

Matt Lights The Bonfire
Since it was his wood pile, Matt lit the fire. (That’s not really the reason, he just lit it because he had the matches.) 😉  Anyway, the wood pile was so big, I wasn’t sure how long it would take for it to really ignite.  The good thing was... I was about to find out.

I can’t say for certain how long it took, but before I knew it, the fire was huge and hot!  It was so hot that the hotdogs we brought down, we couldn’t even cook until real late in the night because we couldn’t get that close to the flames.  Yeah, it was hot.

The Bonfire Grows
Then, just when we thought the flame couldn’t get any higher or hotter... it got higher and hotter. 😉 (I happen to be taking a picture next to it when it had to be at least 12-15 feet in the air.)  Whew!  I’m glad I didn’t get turned into a fricasseed Rooster!

More People Arrive
Sometime around 7-8 pm a few more people showed up to hang out.  In this group of people were Knagy, Rica, Chico, and Gary. (Chico I know from WVU, Knagy I know from coming to Washington a bunch, Rico I know a bunch of ways, and Gary I just met.)    Got it.

As I just mentioned, I knew almost everybody here so when new people showed up, I was excited to get to catch up with them.  So basically, for the next few hours, all the guys just hung around the fire cracking jokes and laughing while having a few beers amongst old friends.  It’s a good time! 🙂

B.J. Shows Up
As the night progressed, the laughter didn’t stop as almost the whole time somebody was saying something funny.  Then, the funniest thing of all happened... B.J. showed up!  LOL  B.J.’s my boy and he showed up last to the party because he had some things to do before hand.

The Fire Dies Down
As the raging fire was dying down, so was the party as by midnight-ish people started to leave one by one.  Since I”m staying here, Matt and I were last ones left standing.  Well... Sammy wanted to hit bar with anybody who would go, but there were no takers.  My bad Sammy! 😉

Calling It A Night
Like I said, the party was over, so... so was the night.  Matt and I did stay outside for awhile longer talking about whatever, but by 1 am it was bedtime for Matt. (He wakes up every morning when his son Liam does, about 6:30 am.)  I stayed up a little while longer before I fell asleep sometime around 3 am.

I didn’t meet the President today, I didn’t get into the Guinness Book of World Records today, I didn’t hang out with 200 WVU football legends today, but what I did do today is hang out with a bunch of close friends at a bonfire and that made for a perfect “DAY 300”!  Thanks for everything Matt! 🙂

Thanks for reading!
