Another Day In Shreveport and Poker! (LA) “DAY 220” – 2/9/11

February 10, 2011 - 11:50 pm - (LA) “DAY 220” - Week 32 - State 29

When I woke up this morning, I was just so relieved to be caught up on my writing. Whew! 🙂  Now, my plan is go to New Orleans for the rest of the week, but the weather is so terrible out right now (raining ice), I think I’m staying one more day in Shreveport.

I really don’t mind staying another day because they do have poker room and I do need to make some money back. 😉  Now, my new problem, I need a new place to stay.  I can’t pay another $50 for a room for the night.  Hmmmm?

Motel 6
Right next door to the Days Inn was a Motel 6, so I went there to negotiate a better deal than the $39.99 a night they had out front on the sign.  That’s $45 after tax and with the $2.99 internet card you have to buy for Wi-Fi (at all Motel 6’s), it comes out to $48.  To much. 🙁

Anyway, after talking to the manager and telling her my tale, I asked her if she could/would give me the room for $20 (for the night) because I’m poor. 😉  She was real cool and said, “Just for one night Rooster?”.  I said, “That’s it.”  She said,” No problem.” (right: I went to take a picture and everybody bailed! LOL)

Nice!  I didn’t get it for free but I didn’t try to either.  I needed a small victory to get my confidence back and I just got it.  Not to mention, I’ll pay $20 for my own room any night if that’s what it comes down to.  That’s my happy number when paying for a place to stay. 🙂

My Room
The room, as I know from staying at so many Motel 6’s over the past few months, was a normal Motel 6 room.  Not bad, not great.  Anyway, it was nice to finally be able to do whatever I wanted to (writing is done), so it was time to play poker and make some money back!

Horseshoe Casino (Harrah’s Property)
This casino is actually pretty nice, it doesn’t have a Vegas theme or anything but it seems completely new on the inside (under 10 years old).  On your walk to the casino, there is a mural on the wall of the history of the Horseshoe and Benny Binion (founder of the Horseshoe and poker legend).

Poker Room
The poker room isn’t big but isn’t small either (15 or so tables).  I don’t care how big it is as long there’s an open seat, so I’m all good.  Today, the open seat was at a 4-8 limit game, so I sat down with $100 and started playing.

With-in 30 minutes, I was up $55 and playing good poker.  Then, the next two hands I played, I played to tightly and folded before the river.  They each would have been long shots, but my card came out each time.  Ahhh!  I could have been up over $100.

Adam Arrives
About an hour into my session, a guy named Adam sat down at the table next to me.  He was a real cool character but as soon as he sat down, my luck changed for the worse.  I went from up $50 to down $150 in less than an hour.  Noooo!

F.Y.I. - The whole time Adam was there, he was singing Tiny Dancer but he didn’t know the words and sang something like this the whole time, Hold me close ahh mighy fasser, but most of the time he just trailed off into some other dialect.  It was to funny!

He even knew he was bashing it because he said to me that he knew he was signing the wrong words.  But... he was enjoying himself and so was I, even though I was losing while he was there.

Taking A Break
After losing a $100 and buying back in for another $100, I was down to just $50.  Ahhh!  Then, I won a hand with two pair and was back up to a $102.  That was good enough  for now, I’m just down $98.  But, I’m not done playing, I have all day to play. (It’s 6 pm.)

Back To My Motel 6 Room
The Motel 6 was only 3 miles from the casino, so it wasn’t a far ride.  On the way back, I stopped at Wendy’s and got some breakfast/lunch/dinner (double stack and fries).  After eating in my room, I went back to casino to win my money back and hopefully... some more!

Poker Again
When I got back to the poker room (7:30 pm), I again played in 4-8 limit game except this time, I bought in for $102 (the remains of my $200 buy-in before).  When I play limit, I play even tighter because everybody chases cards and why not... it’s only 4 or 8 dollars more.

I know this, so I just wait around and hope to hit the nuts on a real big every now and then, while not getting bad beat on the river to often.  Easier said than done. 😉

Anyway, after playing for 4 more hours, I had $160-ish in chips in front of me.  Not bad, but I’m still down $40 for the day, so it’s not good either.  Needing a break, I got up from the table and talked to Jeremy (CA) for a little while before I sat back down.

A Big Hand (Especially for Limit)
The very first hand I sat back down to play, I got pocket Kings (K,K).  When the betting came to me,, I raised to $8.  Somebody else then raised $12, then to $16, and finally it was capped at $20 (5 raises max except when heads up).  Also there were 5 players in the hand.

The flop... K, 10, 6.  Money!  I hit top set.  But, there’s 5 people in the hand, so I won’t slow play it, I don’t want anybody to catch a straight or flush on me.  Somebody bet, then I raised, the guy re-raised, and I raised back (4 people stayed in).

The turn... J of spades.  They checked to me, then I bet $8.  Nobody raised me back.  The river... 6.  I have a full house, the only hand that can beat me is quad 6’s, I’m gold.  Somebody bet out $8, so I raised to $16.  Three people called and I won the hand.  (The other raiser flopped a set of tens.  Ahhh, tough beat.)

After winning that hand, I went from down $40 on the day to up $160.  Woo hoo!  I played a few more hands and then left for the night.  It was after 1 am and I have a 6 hour drive ahead of me tomorrow, plus I was up $140.  I’ll take it! 🙂

Waffle House
Since all I ate today was a little bit of Wendy’s earlier, I figured I’d treat myself to some fine American dining... Waffle House.  I haven’t eaten in a Waffle House yet on this trip although I have at some point in my life, somewhere.

Anyway, I ordered a big breakfast and ate the whole thing as if I had never eaten before.  I guess I was hungrier than I thought.  It was good, but all breakfast is good and it’s pretty hard to screw up. 😉

Calling It A Night
It was after 2 am when I finally got back to my room and fell asleep.  I’m glad my losing streak didn’t continue as I got a half-price room today and then won $140 ($130 after eating) playing poker today.

So, for my three days in Shreveport, I spent nothing while making a few bucks.  That’s exactly what I needed and if this trend continues... I’ll crew back into NJ! 🙂

Thanks for reading!
