Memorial Day Monday In Massachusetts! (MA) “DAY 330” – 5/30/11

May 31, 2011 - 12:08 pm - (MA) “DAY 330” - Week 48 (for real) - State 45

When I got up this morning I had a decision to make.  Do I pay for another day at the Motel 6 which will put my total funds under $400 or do I leave and see what happens?

After thinking about it and realizing it’s Memorial Day, I decided it was a National Holiday and I should relax just like the rest of the country is. (I’ll worry about making money when I get back from Canada and play poker in RI and CT. It will be must win time then.)

What To Do Today
Once I got done writing and posting “DAYS 327 & 328” (2 pm-ish), I checked the internet to see what events were going around me or anything I could do interesting in the immediate area.  The only thing real close by was a Garden in the Woods that the Boston Globe said was amazing.

Now, I’m not a fan of this kind of stuff (I’ve written that many times this year), but since I have nowhere else to go and nothing else to do, this is my plan for the day. (I was close to driving an hour and half to Springfield, MA to see the basketball Hall of Fame but by the time I found that out, it was to late because they closed at 4 pm.)

Garden In The Forest
If I wanted to I could go into a bunch of stuff I learned about this garden and this different flowers and plants I saw, but truthfully I really don’t want to because it didn’t interest me to much. (I only went here to do something and kill some time.)

So, after walking around in the forest for almost 2 hours looking at kinds of flowers and whatnot, I left to find a nearby bar that I could watch the Yankee game at. (That’s a bar with the baseball package because I’m in the Boston area.)

Owen O’Leary’s
The only sports in the area bar other than the one went to yesterday was Owen O’Leary’s.  I guess that’s where I’m going.  And when I got there, I got lucky because they just opened at 4 pm because it’s Memorial Day.

Now, this bar wasn’t bad but it was busy at all. (It’s Memorial Day Monday and everybody is at a party somewhere I’m sure, that’s where I’d be.;))

Anyway, I asked if they had baseball package and they said no because nobody in this area would watch it. (They only watch the Red Sox games around here.)  So, instead of just leaving I ordered a Shepard’s Pie and sat at the bar for awhile.

It was around 5-6 pm when I decided to leave but I knew I would come back later and see if this place picked up at all.  Like I said, it wasn’t bad, there just wasn’t any people there.

Motel 6 & Then Back To O’Leary’s
When I got back to my room I relaxed for a little while before I left again and went back to O’Leary’s to see how the night time crowd was.  When I re-arrived at O’Leary’s it was much busier than it was during the day but not the kind the crowd I would have hoped. (It was mainly older couples or gamblers.)

F.Y.I. - They do lotto right here at the bar as well as Keno.  And, they also have those pull tabs that I saw in the Seattle area.  So there were a bunch of people just playing Keno and pull tabs all night long.

Pizza & Wing Special
The best thing about this bar tonight was that on Monday nights after 8:30 pm they have .25 cent wings and $1 pizzas.  Nice!  I can live with that. 😉  So, I ordered 5 wings, a pizza, and beer and sat down at the bar for awhile.

Talking With Kyle (The Bartender)
Since I was there twice within a few hours, the bartender (Kyle) started talking to me and asked me where I was from etc...  I told him about my journey and by the end of the night, we exchanged numbers because he’s going to the Red Sox game tomorrow (Tuesday) and since I might do the same, we might meet up to tailgate.  Thanks Kyle!

By now it was 11 pm and since I wasn’t drinking (I had only 1 beer), I left O’Leary’s and went back to my Motel 6 room which was just a 1 mile away.

Crashing In my Room
For the second night in a row I fell asleep in my room before Jeremy called me to talk about my day and whatever else we talk about.  I guess I’m tired and since I have a room, I’m taking advantage of it because tomorrow I’m homeless again. (I”m not getting this Motel 6 room again.)

Well... that’s it and as I found out, there’s no replacing friends and family on a weekend that you normally only spend time with those people.  So, I hope all my friends and family had fun this weekend and I’ll see ya for the next holiday which is July 4th when I’ll be home. 🙂

Lastly, to all our current and former military members, I send out a sincere Thank You for all that you do and have done for our great county!  And to the fallen, your bravery will never be forgotten!

Thanks for reading!
