Thursday In Biloxi Is Like Groundhog’s Day! (MS) “DAY 228” – 2/17/11

February 19, 2011 - 9:00 am - (MS) “DAY 228” - Week 33 - State 30

When I woke up today (Thursday), I again... had to figure out a way to get another comped room for the night.  I’ve already been comped for the last three nights, so let’s try for a fourth. 😉

F.Y.I. -
Getting a comped room Sun-Thur isn’t that hard if you find the right person to talk to, the weekends on the other hand... that’s another story. (We’ll get into that in Friday’s post.)

Anyway, after finding the right person to talk to, I got another night for free.  Woo Hoo!  The bad news... while I was getting my room comped (casino host), I found out that the weekend here is completed booked up and I will not be getting a comped room for Friday or Saturday night.

My Day - “Groundhogs Day”
It’s a little hard to remember my Thursday in detail because my Monday-Thursday has been like “Groundhogs Day”.  If you didn’t see that movie, what I’m saying is... I have done the same things each day I have been here.

For example, no... in reality... everyday this week has gone something like this.  I get up, drive to the local convenience store (just to get out and take pictures), write in my room, go downstairs to play poker, eat the buffet, play more poker, and then go to bed (in my room) sometime after 2 am.

If you have read the past 3 days, then you know what I did today.  So, all I’m gonna do is fill in the variables that made this day slightly different than the others.

Thursday’s Slight Changes
The only real changes in my Thursday compared to the previous 3 days... is the amount of money I won playing 4-8 limit Hold’em and the beautiful sunset I saw from my balcony around 6 pm.

That’s because the buffet was the same as it was the past 3 days (it changes for the weekend), the poker room had the same people in it, and my sleeping schedule hasn’t changed all trip (for the most part).

Playing Poker
What I’m gonna talk about right now isn’t the hands I played, but who I played them with.  A lot of people in America still think of poker as seedy game with shady people playing.  (Trust me, I know many people still think this way about the game.)

Anyway, the thing is... this couldn’t be farther from the truth.  Most of the people I have played with this year are professionals, college graduates, family men (women), and so on and so forth.  They haven’t been drug dealers, killers, or degenerates.

I tell you this because I too am sometimes surprised at who I’m playing with at the poker table.  For instance, tonight I played next to Kyle.  Kyle looks normal enough but he’s a scientist (geologist) here in town working on the Gulf’s ecosystem or something. (The oil spill awhile back has really screwed up things down here.)  Crazy huh? (right: Kyle)

And it’s not just him, other than Kyle, tonight I played with a retired policeman, a retired teacher, a lawyer... you get the picture.  Poker is played by everybody and is not a dirty or unscrupulous game.  Basically, all I’m trying to say is... it’s not what many people perceive it to be.  Got it. 🙂

Poker Results For The Day

After playing for about 10 hours total today (a few different sessions), I finished the day plus about $84.  I say about because I may be off a few dollars here or there.  I bought some food, tipped some people, so it’s close to plus $84.  Not a bad day, considering my room was free and all my meals were comped.

The Only Difference In My Day

The only difference in my day today was that I wasn’t gonna get much sleep tonight.  That’s because I have to be up and alert by 6:30 am for a 6:45 am radio interview I have Friday morning on DayBreak USA hosted by Scott West.

So, even though I had to be up early, I still didn’t get to bed until almost 4 am.  My night-owl lifestyle kills me in situations like this.  Ahhh!   Anyway, that was my day... wish me luck on the interview (although it already happened).

Thanks for reading!
